The Annual Regional Epidemiologists’ Meeting will be held on 2 - 3 June 2009. This time it will be arranged in Minsk by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus, the Republican Centre for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Public Health and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.
Representatives of the public health institutes from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Belarus, Poland, Russia and Ukraine are invited to the meeting. Russia will send representatives from 11 entities of the Northwestern region as well as the Pasteur Institute from Saint-Petersburg and the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Well-being (Rospotrebnadzor) in Moscow. Also, representatives from international health organizations like European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and WHO Regional Office for Europe are invited to participate as well as managing editor of the Eurosurveillance Journal.
The main topics of the Regional Epidemiologists’ Meeting will be the following:
1. Vaccination programmes
• Recent changes in the national vaccination programmes and their background
• Elimination of measles in WHO European region
• Update on ECDC and WHO/EURO strategies towards vaccine preventable diseases
• Vaccination registers
• Adverse events
• Public scepticism towards vaccines
2. New vaccines: Exchange of experience and planning of new vaccines in national vaccination programmes:
• Against rotavirus infection
• Against Hib
• Against pneumococcal infection
• Against human papilloma virus
• Against hepatitis A
During the meeting participants will be given a presentation on the European reference laboratory of rotavirus in Belarus. Also, further co-operation in the field of vaccine preventable diseases will be an issue for discussion.
Last year, the Regional Epidemiologists’ Meeting was held in Oslo. Abstracts of the presentations given during the meeting in Oslo were published in the EpiNorth Journal, Vol. 9, No. 4.
