Stein started to work at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health in 1998 after leaving his job as county dentist in Finnmark, where he had worked with the dental health projects in the Murmansk region. He had a lot of experience in collaboration with the neighbouring areas in the north when he joined the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the institute. His task was to establish department’s cooperation in infection control with the Baltic countries and Northwest Russia.
For ten years he was the leader of the EpiNorth project and other cooperation projects in Northwest Russia. Stein built a large network which is still strong and alive. Stein had, thanks to his social being, an incredible ability to develop close and warm relationships with both colleagues and other key persons across borders.
In addition, Stein was a part of Department management . His long experience in the scout movement was very useful in keeping track of all the Department’s employees in the time of major expansion of the department.
After Stein left the Institute of Public Health in 2007, he went back to his old dental profession and worked as a dentist until he retired last year. Stein was looking forward to active retirement with a lot of travelling and being together with an increasing number of grandchildren, but that was not to be. He passed away surrounded by his wife Torunn and children Bjørn, Are and Siv.
