A decrease of hepatitis A in Estonia

The Health Board of Estonia reports that incidence of hepatitis A has steadily decreased in the county of Viljandi and totally in Estonia. In the first quarter of 2012 there were 29 cases of hepatitis A reported, of them 23 cases in Viljandi, one in Tallinn and two in Raplamaa and Jarvamaa.
An outbreak was reported in one school in Viljandi with 6 students and one teacher. Enhanced preventive measures are taken at school. Teachers and medical personnel at school were vaccinated against hepatitis A. Daily monitoring is established in this school.
In 2011 there were 154 cases of hepatitis A reported in Estonia. Of these 116 cases were reported in Viljandi county. In 2011 there were 1951 people vaccinated against hepatitis A in Viljandi as in total 7085 people received the vaccine in Estonia.
Since the hepatitis A outbreak has not completely stopped the Health Board of Estonia recommends enforcing personal hygiene and vaccination against hepatitis A.
