As of 26 July 2012 Lithuanian Centre for Communicable Diseases and AIDS reported an imported case of malaria in Kaunas city, Lithuania.

A person was travelling between 25 June-18 July 2012 in several African countries (Gambia, Mauritania, other), he didn’t use prophylactic treatment against malaria. He became ill during the trip and received medical help in Gambia. The traveller was diagnosed with malaria on 19 July  after he returned to Lithuania.

Between 2002 and 2011 there were 39 cases of imported malaria reported in Lithuania, of these 2 died. In recent years more tourists get ill as previously there were mostly sailors and soldiers coming from African countries.
