Outbreak of hepatitis A in Norway: the most likely source of infection is imported frozen cake

In April 2014 the Norwegian Institute of Public Health reported that nineteen of the reported cases of hepatitis A are infected with the same variant of the virus. Several of the patients related to the outbreak have eaten cake with berries that was imported from Germany.

An outbreak of measles in Latvia

As of 4 April 2014, Center for prevention and control ofdiseases of Latvia reported an outbreak of measles. In March and April this year there were 8 cases of measles reported, mostly adults with no vaccination or with unknown vaccination status.

Update on an outbreak of gastroenteritis in Kaliningrad, Russia

As of 26 March 2014, Rospotrebnadzor in Kaliningrad updated information on an outbreak of intestinal infection in Kaliningrad, Russia. From 22 to 26 March 2014 in total 74 people (of these 3 children <14 years of age) sought medical help.

An outbreak of intestinal infection in Kalinigrad, Russia

[24.03.14]

As of 23 March 2014, Rospotrebnadzor in Kaliningrad oblast, Russia reported an outbreak of intestinal infection in the city of Kaliningrad. Thirty two people sought medical help at the hospital of infectious diseases after consumption of “shawarma” produced in local market.

An increase of hepatitis A in the Republic of Karelia

As of 18 March 2014, Rospotrebnadzor in the Republic of Karelia reported an increase of number of cases of hepatitis A. Between January and February 2014 there are already 11 cases reported. In 2013 there were 17 cases of hepatitis A reported (incidence 2.67 cases per 100.000 population) and 4 cases reported in 2012.

Measles reported in Iceland

As of 8 March 2014, the Directorate of Health of Iceland reported an imported case of measles. An unvaccinated 13 months old child became ill and was hospitalised end of February 2014. Investigation is ongoing; parents are urged to vaccinate their children.

As of 10 February 2014, the Centre for Communicable Diseases and AIDS, Lithuania reported an outbreak of trichinellosis in Joniskis district. Ten people became ill.
